Challenges
- When building a computer vision model you have to visually teach it what things are in order for it to identify objects and actions. For highlight this requires labeling video data and lots of it. At first this was tough as we did it by hand but eventually we automated this process using advanced algorithms that are publicly available.
- Building algorithms that are fast, reliable, and scalable is a challenge. This is one we’re still admittedly working on, but getting the AI to be able to identify points, rebounds, and turnovers is a great starting point for what we envision.
Key Solutions Implemented
- Automatic video based AI stat tracking is one of the most impressive yet challenging things we’ve ever worked on. Very proud of the progress we’ve made and excited to see where we can take it as we add in multi-player!
- Real time location tracking while not useful for all apps has been a game changer for highlight. Knowing when users of our app are actively at a court allows us to provide users with the necessary information to go interact with each other in the real world.
